Interview with Jolyon Jones. The cuts from the barricade

Categories: Interviews

Jolyon Jones is a social worker and an activist against the cuts. He was the secretary of the Solihull local government UNISON branch and now he is part of the Social Work Action Network (SWAN) in the West Midlands.

Moreover, in the last few months he has been blogging about cuts in children’s services, publishing many of his articles in the website of Birmingham Against the Cuts.

In this interview he goes back to the ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda supported by the last Labour government and he compares it with the new approach of the Conservative and LibDem coalition.

“The Every Child Matters Agenda has been completely abandoned by this government (…). And it is not just a matter of making cuts but it’s also driven politically and ideologically because this government doesn’t believe in the universal services, it believes in early intervention”

When we ask him about cuts in Birmingham he says something similar to what Neil Elkes explained in the last interview: it’s still difficult to know how the cuts are being made.

“Many times the cuts are not very direct and it is very difficult to explain the impact on the services”

The interview provides a different view of the cuts based on the experience of somebody who is actually fighting against them and at the same has experience as a social worker.

First off I would like to say terrific blog! I had a quick question which
I’d like to ask if you don’t mind. I was curious to find out how you center yourself and
clear your mind before writing. I have had
a hard time clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out there.
I truly do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first
10 to 15 minutes are generally wasted just trying to figure out
how to begin. Any recommendations or tips? Thank you!
